How can parents recognize and nurture potential in their children? How can they use questions to develop critical thinking? What are some effective ways to praise children that increases motivation?  Join Mary Cay Ricci, as she answers these and many other questions about developing talent in our young learners (ages 4-7).  Parents will leave this session with a tool that allows them to observe, reflect and respond to their child’s behaviors, guidelines for asking questions that allow for critical and creative thinking and examples of how praise can help develop a growth mindset.

Overview of the Gifted and Talented Program

October 5, 2010 from 7:00 to 8:30 PM at Faulkner Ridge Center

160 people in attendance (120 elementary parents: 40 secondary parents)

 

This Academy which was separated by grade level into two presentations: one for those interested in the elementary school GT program and the other for those interested in the secondary GT school program.  Kathleen Barbagallo, Elementary GT Resource Teacher, spoke about the elementary GT program curriculum including CEUs, instructional seminars, the GT math program and the pathways available to qualify for these programs.    Debbie Blum, Secondary GT Resource Teacher, discussed the GT offerings for both middle and high school.  She explained the AP program, and the GT research and mentor courses.  In both rooms, parents were encouraged to write their questions on index cards.  Questions of general interest were written on white cards and answered during the session.  Questions of a personal nature were written on colored cards and answered by staff at a later date.   Following both of the presentations, GT parent reps met in an adjoining room to discuss their action plan for the upcoming school year.

Each year students submit everything that they can think of to the admissions office, and each year most of these items are tossed out without a review. Learn what admissions selection teams really look for and how they make their decisions. Ms. Barbara F. Hall, Associate Provost, New York University, will share admissions criteria used by selective universities and tips on how to write an essay that accurately communicates the voice of the student.  Ms. Barbara F. Hall has a vast range of experience working in the college admissions field at a number of  elective and highly selective universities.

GT Advisory Committee – Second Annual Educator Recognition Event

This award recognizes exemplary commitment to the needs of advanced-level learners and contributions to the Howard County Gifted and Talented Education Program. It is our goal to honor those who support, enrich and advocate for advanced level learners in Howard County Public Schools. Nominations may be made by students or parents, on behalf of their children. Last year, over twenty-five Howard County educators were honored for their efforts.Nominations will be available 1-17-11

The deadline for all nominations is 2-28-11

Help Wanted

The GT Teacher Recognition Committee has begun work on its 2nd Annual Teacher Recognition Event.  The tentative date for this year’s event is April 27, 2011.  Nomination forms will be available on January 17, 2011.  It is our goal to honor those who go above and beyond to support, enrich, and advocate for gifted and talented education in Howard County Public Schools.  Last year, over twenty five Howard County educators were honored for their efforts. This is a perfect way to get involved no matter how busy you may be.  We will not be meeting in person until January; therefore, most correspondence will be done via email.  We are actively seeking dedicated team members who can help to make this event special for those who do so much for our children.  We would love to have people who are artistic, people who are good with Powerpoint, and those who are just willing to  help.If you would like to get involved please contact us at GTteachRec@aol.com.
